The Pervasive Parenting Center successfully hosted the first-ever Rural Oklahoma Camp for Expanding Transition (ROCKET Camp) on June 26–27, 2025, at the Washington Building in McAlester, Oklahoma.
Seven campers, ages 14–24, participated in two days of hands-on learning and connection, focused on developing job readiness, social skills, and self-advocacy. Through a series of interactive and universally designed sessions, the camp provided a fun and supportive environment where young adults could grow, build confidence, and take meaningful steps toward independence.
“Everything! It was all fun!” shared camper Marie when asked what she enjoyed most. Another camper, Victoria, added, “I’m really glad I came. I had a lot of fun.”
Funded by the Oklahoma State Department of Education’s Pathways to Partnerships Grant, ROCKET Camp brought together a dedicated team of educators, counselors, and advocates who tailored activities to the unique needs of each participant. The event marked a major milestone in providing much-needed transitional support to youth in rural Oklahoma.
A parent expressed deep gratitude, saying, “I’m so happy that you guys are doing this here. We don’t have anything for our kids to do, and this is great. Thank you!”
Kim Baxter, Special Education Director at McAlester Public Schools, echoed that sentiment: “We’re happy to help. This is something we have been needing for a long time.”
The Pervasive Parenting Center is proud to have played a role in launching this impactful event and remains committed to empowering youth with disabilities throughout the region.
Stay tuned for updates on future ROCKET Camps and other programs designed to support transition-aged youth across Oklahoma.
